At 8:30 a.m. PST on Monday November 12, David Sacks, corporate vice president of Microsoft, and Jeff Teper, corporate vice president of Microsoft Office Division, Scott Guthrie, Corporate Vice of President Windows Azure, and Jared Spataro, Senior Director of SharePoint, spoke live from the in Las Vegas about what to expect in SharePoint Online 2013. There were over 10,000 attendees at the keynote and many more viewers online that made #SPC12 become the #1 trend on twitter worldwide. The highlights from the two hour keynote are as follows:

  • “SharePoint is a new way to work.” ~ new SharePoint motto
  • “SharePoint is more than a product. It is a way of life.” ~ Jared Spataro
  • “SharePoint is a 2 billion a year industry.” ~ Jared Spataro
  • “SharePoint 2013 is pivotal. It’s a bridge, between where we’ve come from to where we are going.” ~ Jared Spataro
  • “This is biggest and best release of SharePoint yet” ~ Jeff Teper
  • SharePoint 2013 has a new Metro look and feel that can be view on any browser.
  • Ending 3 year release model – cloud updates every 90 days!
  • SharePoint 2013 online will use Skydive Pro for document storage in your My Site.
  • SharePoint 2013 on-promise and online will have following people, sites, and documents so that you can get information in your My Site news feed about them.
  • SharePoint 2013 has document search at the library level to filter results.
  • With SharePoint 2013 you can drag and drop into a library without ActiveX controls.
  • You will be able to share documents anonymously.
  • Skydive Pro, which works with SharePoint 2013 to store documents in the cloud, is native to Windows 8.
  • With SharePoint 2013 themes you can drag and drop background images and select colours easily.
  • Enhanced task functionality with out-of-the-box task timeline and all your tasks from each SharePoint site, Microsoft Project site, and Outlook are aggregated in your My Site.
  • In SharePoint 2013 you can post messages to individual or groups of people.
  • The new newfeed on My Site allow you to view conversations, embed video or images, posts messages with @ to highlight people or # to tag it.
  • There is a new Windows Phone SharePoint App out today!
  • “Social Networking is the most efficient many-to-many communication method”
  • “85% of Fortune 500 use Yammer. 61% of all organizations have enterprise social networking.”
  • “Once people are empowered and connected, they become more engaged.”
  • “Social has changed the way we work and the way we are; it’s a catalyst, as well as a solution”
  • “When your company has fully embraced social, you’re in a much better position to deal with change.”
  • “Yammer inside of SharePoint, and SharePoint inside of Yammer”
  • Yammer integration with Dynamics, Outlook, and Exchange coming later.
  • Yammer integration down to file or object level. Comments on a file can be linked to your SharePoint deployments.
  • SharePoint and Yammer is still separate.
  • SharePoint 2013 Online + Yammer = Free!!!
  • SharePoint 2013 on-premise + Yammer = reduced cost
  • There is a new button in SharePoint to post to yammer
  • Auto complete, past clicked through, and preview in SharePoint 2013 search.
  • You don’t have to use SharePoint Designer to create master page any more. You can use any web page designer and SharePoint 2013 can convert the HTML page into master page!
  • Snippet gallery is your way to add #SP2013 controls into your branding.
  • Snippet can add a search bar to your SharePoint page or Dreamweaver.
  • Recommendations is a new SharePoint feature in 2013.
  • E-discovery across SharePoint, Exchange, Lync, and file system are all controlled through SharePoint 2013!
  • Site mailboxes help integrate Exchange and SharePoint.
  • SharePoint task management includes tasks created with Microsoft Project products.
  • You can bring over your SharePoint 2010 in your SharePoint 2013 environment without upgrading. It will run just like your SharePoint 2010 environment and you can upgrade it when you want to.
  • There is 40% performance improvement, 4 times the compression on images, and 50% reduction in server side latency with SharePoint 2013.
  • SP Cloud App model = simplification + execution loosely coupled + support industry development standards.
  • Cloud based solutions has be hosted by Microsoft or by a provider.
  • Long-running workflows can now run on Windows Azure.
  • SharePoint 2013 will have a SharePoint store! You do not have to use the store to deploy your solutions, but it can help you monetize your solutions.
