On August 24th Microsoft SharePoint Server 2016 Preview was released to the public. Some of the new features contained within SharePoint 2016 include:

- Cloud Search Search as a Service with a unified index in Office 365 enabling a single search experience combined with the power of the Office Graph
- Team Sites and OneDrive for Business Extend Team Sites and OneDrive for Business to Office 365 seamlessly
- Operational Insights Improved analytics across operational data
- SharePoint Server 2016 IT Preview supports TLS 1.2 connection encryption by default
- Information Rights Management (IRM) capabilities to secure information by encrypting and securing information on SharePoint libraries with OneDrive for Business
- Supports uploading and downloading files larger than 2,047 MB
- Sending email to SMTP servers that use STARTTLS connection encryption
- Support for SMTP servers that use TCP ports other than the default port (25)
- Rename files, create new files, and share files from within the WOPI iframe on the browser page
- Supports drives that are formatted with the ReFS file system
